| Aquarium & Students Help Plant Marshland In Harbor |
|
The aquarium placed more than a dozen islands in the harbor without plants just to see what would happen. When they pulled them out a month later they were filled with mussels, aquatic worms and microorganisms. "People don't think there's a lot of animals living in the harbor, but there really are and what we're trying to do is improve water quality for them and give them a little bit of habitat," said Nancy Bankey, National Aquarium. The Waterfront Partnership has a similar project just a pier away. It's goal is to make the harbor swimmable and fishable by 2020. "That would be a great thing to see, but a lot of work," Teryn Dickson, Poly senior. "Nature intended for marshlands to be a water filter. They're not here anymore. We have to put them back," said Van Reiner, Waterfront Partnership. University of Maryland will study the floating islands to see if they are accomplishing their goal of absorbing pollutants. If so, more may be launched. |
