Project Summary:

The Washington Nationals were seeking to beatify the waterfront area of the Anacostia River located directly in front of Nationals Stadium. BioHaven Floating Islands were selected as part of an integrated project that included living shoreline establishment, a floating pier and waterway improvements. BioHavens were chosen due to their ability to quickly support desired plant habitat as well as their added benefits of water treatment. In all, Patriot Land and Wildlife in conjunction with Bluewing Environmental Solutions installed 7 different islands totaling over 1600 square feet of BioHaven Floating Islands. Each island was planted with a variety of native wetlands species and larger islands received matting for future maintenance of plant material. These islands have the potential to process as many nutrients as 6.4 acres of natural wetlands.
