Project Name: Dannon Garth Pond
Project Location: Dannon Garth, Columbia, MD
Date of Installation: May 2009, July 2010
Project Details:
BlueWing has been working with the Open Space Management group of the Columbia Association to enhance water quality, improve wildlife habitat and manage algae in its stormwater facilities. We have provided 3 – 35 square foot islands (105 square feet total) in each of the last 2 years. The stormwater pond at Dannon Garth now has 210 square feet of islands that are heavily used by Red Bellied Turtles and the older islands are developing into a diverse wetland community. Working with CA staff in July 2010, Bluewing successfully launched 3 – 35 square foot islands, planted with a variety of native wetland plants including: Marsh hibiscus, Arrow Arum, Duck potato and common three-square. The islands were placed near the main stream inlet to the pond to maximize nutrient capture within the islands. The islands were wrapped in a coconut fiber mat over a wetland seed mix (Ernst Mix #131) on the island edge and one island had a temporary goose protection fence installed to protect sensitive plants from waterfowl predation. The islands (210 sq ft) provides a huge surface area (41,580 sq ft) for bio-processing of nutrient laden water as it enters the pond and are anticipated to remove 128 lbs of nitrates, 18 lbs of phosphates and 128 lbs of ammonia, 0.06 lbs of copper and 0.38 lbs of zinc from the water per year (based on published scientific studies).
